Café Zwart Wit wanted to introduce a new reusable, sustainable

takeaway coffee mug to their customers. We wanted to take a completely new approach on the experience of take away coffee by incorporating elements of the café into the cup itself.

Our final design was a cup that would stimulate all the senses of the body, providing the customer with a relaxing yet nostalgic experience to their daily coffee drinking ritual. We made sure the design would embody both the drinking experience as well as an added touch of hospitality that Zwart Wit is known for.

The body comprises of a twistable top which would magnetically  "click" open and close, revealing a tiny transparent bar that showed the level of coffee inside the mug. The idea was to prompt visual clues as to whether the coffee was a double espresso, cappuccino or a chai latte. The base of the cup was made of recycled coffee grounds adding texture and scent.

On the top, a transparent glass window allows for the latte artwork of the barista to be appreciated, an element which is often always disregarded in regular take away cups. The interchangeable glass has songs from the café’s music playlist engraved on the glass

itself, which is a nice touch for those who want to take a part of Zwart Wit on the go with them. The idea was that these tops could be changed by the baristas to include new songs every time.

We offered a variety of designs for the tops of the cups, incorporating Zwart Wit’s branding and logo to give a more playful, customized appeal, and be instantly recognizable.

My main contribution was to investigate customer and barista behaviors, prototype and ensure the branding guidelines were maintained.
